You really have never liked camping. Or, at least now you aren't too fond of it -- it does not normally include getting caught and locked in some sort of cellar.
Some first field mission. An attempt in team bonding, Jack had said -- to get you included, perhaps. But more likely you think it's because he does not trust you back at the Hub by yourself but can you blame him after recent events?
Tosh is much more level headed than you -- you've had your moment of panic, of doubt. But she keeps her calm, even though you're angry, upset and afraid.
"What's that?" her voice brings you back from trying to fix the light.
"You've found something?"
"It's just a shoe." A beat, and she looks at you. "Wait, there's another. There's dozens of them."
You remember the body Gwen and Owen found in the woods, stripped meticulously of flesh and meat.
A beat.
There are, indeed. Clothing, shoes. It's a mess.
"Oh my god."
"How many people have been down here?"
"-and what happened to them?" you finish.
"Is that a fridge?" Tosh has found something else, a fridge. You see it too, but she reaches it faster and opens it. But whatever it is that she sees shocks her to the core, if how quickly she slams it shut says anything about it.
"What is it? What's in there?" you ask, standing up from the bench. You need to know, you need to know what this is and what is in store for the two of you if you don't get out of this --
-- no response. "Tell me!" Tosh tries to stop you, grab you. Maybe she's trying to protect you, but you've already watched Canary Wharf burn, saw friends die horribly, converted and stayed with Lisa as she slipped further from you.
"Ianto, don't!"
"I want to know." You pull away and move towards the fridge and open it.
Items sit on the shelves, some wrapped in plastic -- some not. Blood is everywhere. Various body parts.
You can only stare at them.
"That's why there was nothing left on the body."
A gasp of fear escapes you.
"We're food."
--
The woman is terrified, like you as she comes to collect the both of you to deliver you both to whatever is behind this. She claims to be a nurse and tries to look you over but you don't allow her to touch you. She leads you both to the house, your blood is pounding in your ears, the woman has the gun -- she's not going to let you go, but there has to be a way --
-- the room she leads you into is worse than the fridge by a long shot. Organs on the chopping board. Bodies wrapped entirely in plastic hung from the ceiling line the walls. And the blood. The blood is everywhere.
A man steps out, laughing at your terrified reactions -- Tosh's question, wondering what the creatures that did this look like. The woman and man kiss and you see red. You act, running for them, earning a punch to the stomach. Winded, you fall and the man starts binding your hands.
"There are three more of them out there." The woman carries on with the information that Tosh had unknowingly supplied her with.
"Not a problem. How are they?"
"They're in a good state. I think they're the best we've ever had." Tosh next, her hands are bound.
All of the disappearances over the years. The stock piles of clothing in the basement. How long had this been going on? The woman drags you up to see.
"Yeah? Oh, I forgot to tell you, we caught the boy. Finally."
They bring out another boy, and pulls off the hood over his head. He's in his late teens, perhaps.
"I won't tell anyone!" he begs. The woman holding you, turns your head by the hair to see him.
"Who is he?" Tosh asks.
"He's meat." the man replies, pushing him back down. The woman continues to fondle you, but you're still staring at where the boy had been.
"I'm afraid we're all just meat." He disappears briefly, and you turn to Tosh. Now is your chance.
"Get ready to run." you say quietly.
The woman hands the man a baseball bat.
"What are you going to do, put us on meathooks?" Tosh demands, and the both of you climb to your feet.
"Not yet." He steps close to her, holding out the bat, "you see, meat has to be tenderized first." he runs the bat down her body, and she looks over at you. You nod. The man moves over to examine you next. You watch that bat, he examines you too with a smile and you return it. And then you pull back and headbutt him as hard as you can, and while he is down yell for Tosh to run while you try to block the woman from chasing her. The man grabs you, punches you and knocks you down.
You meet the boy's glance briefly, and then look up just in time to see the butt of the rifle before it smashes against your face.
--
There's a hood over your face, it smells like vomit and blood -- from the other victims, other's who had lain here on this floor, been stripped to nothing but meat and a skeleton. You'd been blind sighted, all of you, into thinking it was not human.
You had all forgotten that humans were just as capable of evil as any alien, if not more -- they knew what they were doing yet they did it anyways.
Torchwood does not guarantee a long life. Most operatives die before thirty, but dying here and like this...
Maybe if you just fell unconscious, it would be over sooner. But you can hear them, Tosh, Gwen and Owen in the other room. "Where's Ianto?" Tosh demands and a second later, the man is back, pulling you up off of the floor and pulling the sack off of you. "Wake up! Time to be bled..." he picks up a meat cleaver --
" Like veal, it takes a long time. But it definitely makes the meat taste better." the cold tip is against your neck now, a single move is all it would take to break through the skin, you know you're crying but this is not how you'd thought...
And then the rumbling, it gets louder and the room begins to shake -- the man lets you go, and Gwen -- you think it's Gwen pulls you up when the wall is torn away by a giant bloody tractor.
Jack has never had better timing, you are sure as he opens fire on the villagers.
